The Book

Pastures of the Empty Page: Fellow Writers on the Life and Legacy of Larry McMurtry, came about fellow writers gathered at the Royal Theater in Archer City to honor Larry after his death in 2021. Stephen Harrigan, Kip Stratton, Elizabeth Crook, and Geoff Dyer were a few of those who read tributes to Larry that night. Those essays were compiled and more writers — among them Lawrence Wright, Paulette Jiles, Erik Calonius, and Katy Vine — added their tributes and Pastures was released in September 2023 by the University of Texas Press. With a beautiful foreword by Stephen Graham Jones and introduction by George Getschow, Pastures tells, in the writers’ own words, why Larry is revered in the literary world. In a recent conversation George had with Ben Fountain, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for his debut novel Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, Ben said Larry “is the granddaddy of us all (writers in Texas).”

All royalties from sales of Pastures go to the ACWW.
